The International Telecommunications Union – ITU has approved the Wimax technology as a 3G standard making it the first non-cellular technology to be part of the 3G group.
“This is a very special and unique milestone for WiMAX technology,” Ron Resnick, president of the WiMAX Forum, said in a statement. “This is the first time that a new air interface has been added to the IMT-2000 set of standards since the original technologies were selected nearly a decade ago. WiMAX technology currently has the potential to reach 2.7 billion people. And today’s announcement expands the reach to a significantly larger global population.”
You can read about the announcement here and here.
I read this article on the TechRepublic that lists 10 different cell phones that can be considered as alternatives to the iPhone, such as Nokia’s N95, the Blackberry Pearl and the Palm Treo 700/750. It’s worth the read for those of you who would like to have the features of an iPhone but not the iPhone itself.
I know things have been slow here on my blog as I’ve been very busy with work that I haven’t had the time to write lately. I do have a couple of topics in mind and will be posting them as soon as I can..
I will be back..
I finally settled down on a cell phone and actually went and got it! As you can see from Part 1 and Part 2 of my quest, I was at first impressed by some of the new Sony Ericsson phones (still like the designs but I am just not used to using them), then I decided to go back to Nokia which has always been my favorite.
Well after keeping my options with Nokia I found a very elegent phone with everything that I need. I got the Nokia 6300! I love the sleek design and the fact that it doesn’t have anything that I cannot use such as 3G (unfortunatly we still don’t have it deployed yet and not expected soon). It has an mp3 player, radio, 128MB memory card expandable to 2GB, 2 MP camera which is ok since I already have a 7.2 MP Sony digital camera. It works on GSM networks and has bluetooth, GPRS and EDGE. I’ve had this phone for a couple of days now and loving it! Guess this is where my quest ends…
