Nokia, in collaboration with the University of Cambridge, has been researching nanotechnology-based solutions for next generation cell phones and came up with a new concept phone called Morph. Using the nanotechnology (a technology used to design and produce extremely small electronic devices and circuits) the research gives a glimpse of what cell phones would look like in the future. An article by Fortune talked about this and gave a description about the future device:
“The phone will be made out of material that can change into different shapes. In a video illustrating what Morph might someday be able to do, Nokia shows the flexible device transforming from a traditional mobile phone with a detachable ear piece to a flat, paper-thin gadget and a wearable watch. It also shows the transparent, green device tapping solar energy, sensing chemical compounds in the air and repelling dirt particles.”
The video is worth seeing to understand the concept. They say that the phone will be ready in at least 11 years, however its not clear what it will actually look like. I wonder if we will really see such technology that soon. This reminds me of the cartoon The Jetsons where everyone had one of those flying transportation devices. I think that’s not very far away either…

This is really interesting, we’re constantly asking ourselves where the future will take technology in terms of mobile phones – 15 years ago it was inconceivable a mobile phone would fit in our pocket, let alone be able to access the internet etc etc.
This is certainly one direction it could take, and at least its reassuring to know Nokia are looking at the future.
I wonder what the other manufacturers are looking at doing? With the iphone clearly bridging the gap between computer and phone, the next leap frog forward could well be in this format.
Morph – i’m sure he was a little character from a Tony Hart series!!

I agree, cell phones are advancing so fast to a point where I am not surprised anymore, just amazed by its capabilities..
And to add, Nokia brought their ideas and plans out to the open.. But I won’t be surprised to hear in a couple of years or even sooner that Apple, or any other manufacturer is developing similar devices or planning any other new concepts..
